Legislature approves SMC renovation and expansion plans

LANSING, MI - June 4, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Southwestern Michigan College is one step closer to renovating its Kairis Technology Building today after the Joint Capital Outlay Subcommittee approved the planning documents, announced Sen. Ron Jelinek and Reps. Sharon Tyler and Matt Lori.

“Despite the tough economic times, higher education is a top priority and we need to provide students with up-to-date learning environments and equipment in order for them to succeed,” said Jelinek, R-Three Oaks. “Approving this project was very important as it will help make our students more competitive upon graduation.”

The project involves the addition and renovation of classroom space to include a new technology lab, additional automotive repair bays, faculty offices and meeting rooms. Technology enhancements, HVAC upgrades and ADA compliance issues also will be included.

“I am pleased that this project has been approved. Southwestern Michigan College has a long record of high achievement serving the local population and those in the surrounding area,” said Lori, R-Constantine. “This facility will further enhance the opportunities available at the college.”

The next step for the project is approval of funding. The Legislature plans to appropriate funds later this month so construction can commence and be completed by the end of the year.

“Improving Michigan’s economy will take long-term solutions and investments,” said Tyler, R-Niles. “Maintaining a solid higher-education system is a key component of economic growth, and I’m very excited at the opportunities this announcement will bring to our community.”
