Kildee and Secretary Donovan Announce More than $1.6 Million in HUD Grants for Flint and Genesee County
CDBG Grants Will Help Revitalize Neighborhoods and Create Jobs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 16, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) and U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced $1,647,759 in funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for Flint and Genesee County. These grants are available through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, which enable state and local governments to undertake a wide range of activities intended to create suitable living environments, provide affordable housing and create economic opportunities. The City of Flint will receive $1,153,340 and Genesee County will receive $494,419.
“This is wonderful news for our community,” said Congressman Kildee. “This funding will revitalize our neighborhoods and help create jobs in the process. I am proud to have supported the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and I look forward to all the good this funding will do for our communities.”
Since 1974, CDBG has provided more than $127 billion to state and local governments to target their own community development priorities. The rehabilitation of affordable housing and the construction and improvement of public facilities have traditionally been the largest uses of CDBG funds. The program is also an important catalyst for job growth and business opportunities. Annual CDBG funds are distributed to communities according to statutory formulas based on population, poverty, pre-1940 housing stock, growth lag, and housing overcrowding.
