Stabenow, Levin Announce Over $5 Million in Recovery Package Funding to Green Public Housing

WASHINGTON, DC – September 24, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) announced today that Michigan has been awarded $5,535,975 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The funding is from the Public Housing Capital Funds and will be used to upgrade public housing by increasing energy efficiency and create jobs.

“This economic recovery funding will provide struggling families across Michigan with quality, affordable housing all while creating good-paying clean-energy jobs and making these public housing facilities energy-efficient,” said Stabenow. “I am laser-focused on making sure Michigan receives much-needed assistance in the economic recovery package, and I am very pleased that help for communities hardest hit by the housing crisis is already on the way.”

“These public housing communities will benefit from greater energy efficiency and the surrounding regions will benefit from the jobs these projects will create,” Levin said. “These grants will go directly to those who need support the most and are sound investments in a vital public good.”
The Public Housing Capital Fund provides funding for the capital and management activities of Public Housing Agencies, including modernization and development of public housing.  HUD accepted applications under this program from public housing authorities between June 22 and August 18.
