WORKSHOPS FOCUS ON INSURANCE, MORTGAGES, INVESTMENTS
LANSING, Michigan – September 30, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — State Senator Martha G. Scott (D-Highland Park), along with the Office of Financial & Insurance Regulation (OFIR), is offering three free financial workshops in October where consumers can learn about auto and home insurance, mortgage and consumer finance, and investor protection.
“Consumer education is integral in ensuring that our financial services industry is safe, sound and entitled to the public trust,” Senator Scott said. “These workshops are a wonderful opportunity for citizens to learn more about consumer protection and rights.”
Each workshop is free and open to the public. They will be conducted by an OFIR financial expert. Citizens can register by calling Senator Scott’s office at 800-726-8878. The workshops are as follows:
Wednesday, October 7, 4 p.m.
Ravendale Community Center, 13903 Harper Avenue, Detroit
Auto & Home Insurance: Consumer rights for insurance under Michigan law, and the basics of auto insurance.
Monday, October 12, 1 p.m.
Acts 29 Fellowship, 12101 Joseph Campau Street, Hamtramck
Mortgage & Consumer Finance: Taking out or modifying a mortgage, challenging errors in a credit report, payday loans, and reverse mortgages.
Monday, October 26, 3 p.m.
Grosse Pointe Public Library Ewald Branch, 15175 East Jefferson Avenue, Grosse Pointe Park
Investor Protection: Fundamentals of investing, steps for protecting your assets, and avoiding financial scams.

Senator Scott represents the 2nd Senate District, which includes areas of Detroit and the cities of Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park and all of the Grosse Pointes. She serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
