Community Action Agency to Receive Grant for Housing Counseling Assistance Program
WASHINGTON, DC - October 15, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Today Congressman Mark Schauer announced that the Community Action Agency has been awarded a U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Housing Counseling Assistance Program grant. The grant is for comprehensive housing counseling ($42,724) and loan documentation review ($5,000) to support housing counseling activities in Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties.
“The Community Action Agency provides an important public service to local consumers through their housing counseling programs,” said Schauer. “This funding will strengthen these critical efforts and help more families in our area experience the American dream of homeownership.”
Comprehensive housing counseling includes: homebuyer education, financial management education, budgeting and credit counseling and foreclosure prevention/intervention activities. Funding for loan documentation review will provide housing counselors the opportunity to review a participants loan documents prior to home purchase in order to prevent them from entering into loan agreements that are substandard or predatory.
Marsha Kreucher, CEO of the tri-county agency, said during these challenging times “we’re pleased to have won this competitive grant to continue to provide free counseling services and support to local citizens on issues of housing and home foreclosure.”
Loan documentation review will also be utilized by foreclosure counselors to ensure that homeowners who are facing foreclosure are not victims of substandard or predatory loans. If loans are questionable, foreclosure counselors will help homeowners obtain assistance with legal services.
Community Action Agency is a HUD and Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Certified Housing Counseling Agency. For more information about Housing Counseling services please contact your local CAA office.
