Stabenow, Levin Announce More than $6.6 Million for Advanced Energy-Efficient Building Technologies in Michigan

WASHINGTON, DC – June 18, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin, both D-Mich., announced $6,641,523 in funding for four Michigan projects supporting advanced energy-efficient building technologies. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The projects will be executed in Midland, West Olive and Benton Harbor.

“Clean energy technology is essential to redeveloping our economy and protecting our environment. Michigan is leading the way in energy-efficient building technology,” said Stabenow. “With these funds, our state will be able to train workers for jobs in the clean energy field, and help Michigan families and businesses reduce their energy costs.”

“These job-creating grants will put Michiganians to work building technology that will help the nation,” Levin said. “Michigan has been a leader in energy-efficient manufacturing, and these recovery grants will help keep it so.”

Three of the grantees will receive funds for projects focusing on improving the energy efficiency of residential and commercial buildings through technological advances in windows and envelope components. The Dow Chemical Corporation of Midland will receive $2,955,156; the Dow Corning Corporation of Midland will receive $1,241,120; and Pleotint LLC of West Olive will receive $402,457. The remaining grantee, Whirlpool Corporation of Benton Harbor, will receive $2,042,700 to focus on increasing the efficiency of water heating equipment and reducing miscellaneous electric loads.

According to the Department of Energy, the nation’s 114 million households and more than 74 million square feet of commercial floor space account for approximately 40 percent of U.S. primary energy consumption, as well as 39 percent of carbon dioxide, 18 percent of nitrogen oxides, and 55 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions. These projects will help lower the energy demands and emissions of commercial buildings and promote a specialized, energy-efficient buildings workforce.
