Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Program Participating in Eaton County Stand Down for Veterans Event

WASHINGTON (June 14, 2017) –- (RealEstateRama) — The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Unclaimed Property program will be participating in the first-ever Eaton County Stand Down for Veterans event to help veterans and their families learn about unclaimed property services and programs.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at the American Legion in Charlotte, Treasury staff members will help individuals search for lost money, stock and safe deposit box items they may have lost or forgotten about. Treasury has participated in similar events in the past and has found that approximately 1 out of every 3 Michiganders who search for lost property will have something to claim.

“Unclaimed Property has returned nearly $300 million to rightful owners and their heirs over the last three fiscal years,” said Terry Stanton, manager of Treasury’s Unclaimed Property program. “Additionally, we find that veterans are often more inclined to have unclaimed property due to how often they relocate as part of their service to our country. Not having a current address on file with a business is a primary cause of funds becoming lost or abandoned.”

Treasury’s Unclaimed Property program is holding millions of dollars in unclaimed assets that includes property from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, stock certificates, insurance policies and valuables left in safe deposit boxes. The state of Michigan will return these assets to their original owners or legal heirs, free of charge, when rightfully claimed.

Anyone may search for unclaimed property at www.michigan.gov/unclaimedproperty or by calling 517-636-5320.
