Gov. Rick Snyder signs bills improving access to in-home stair lifts for Michigan residents

LANSING, Mich. – May 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Gov. Rick Snyder today signed legislation that will give seniors, disabled veterans and mobility-impaired individuals greater access to in-home stair lifts.

“Expanding the pool of contractors who install residential stair lifts eases the burden on Michigan residents, especially those on a fixed income,” Snyder said. “Outdated regulatory restrictions imposed unnecessary costs and delays for Michiganders needing mobility assistance, and now they will no longer face those obstacles.”

House Bills 4162 and 4163, sponsored by state Reps. Aric Nesbitt and Al Pscholka, respectively, exempt residential stairway lifts from regulations written for commercial elevators and lifts and allow individuals who are not licensed elevator contractors to install lifts as long as they are certified by the manufacturer.

The bills expand the pool of qualified installers and lower the cost of installation. They are now Public Acts 34 and 35 of 2015.

The governor also signed three other bills:

HB 4038, sponsored by state Rep. Anthony Forlini, allows tenants to opt to receive notices from landlords electronically. Landlords could not refuse to lease to tenants refusing to consent to electronic service under the bill. It is now PA 36.

HB 4076 is a technical fix sponsored by state Rep. Bruce Rendon that removes a reference to the definition of “lawful purpose” in firearms statute, which is an outdated definition already removed from other statutes. It is now PA 37.

Senate Bill 52, sponsored by state Sen. Jim Stamas, moves the distribution of a “welcome home” resource letter for returning veterans to the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, allowing the agency to consolidate the letter with other veterans assistance efforts to more effectively inform veterans of the statewide resources available to them. It is now PA 38.
