The DEQ today released a draft wastewater discharge permit modification for Eagle Mine’s Humboldt Mill.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 3, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The DEQ issued the mill a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit on April 7, which included a requirement for a hydrological study to determine the best location and discharge strategy to protect the integrity of downstream wetlands. That requirement originated after a January 13 public meeting where attendees expressed concern about potential impacts to wetland hydrology.
In response to those concerns and their permit requirement, Eagle recently submitted a request to modify their permit to establish a new outfall. The proposed outfall is located near the historic discharge from Humboldt Pit to the adjacent wetland.
The DEQ processed this request, and the draft permit contains the same limitations on flows and water quality as the April 7 permit that was the subject of the January 13 public hearing. The only change to the permit is to add another outfall location, 530 feet west of their original outfall. Both outfalls discharge to the same wetland.
Comments on the draft permit should be sent to Samuel Snow at by August 3.
