MSU Extension, along with Troy Huffaker of DTL Herbs Ltd, is offering a series of classes called Herbs for the Home Garden.

August 24, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Herbs provide beauty and fragrance in the garden and can enhance the flavor and quality of foods, provide a healthy alternative to salt, and be used for medicinal purposes. Many herbs can be easily grown in the home garden or in pots in the kitchen helping to stretch our food dollars.

This series will be held the first Friday of the month, September through December. Attendees can go to as many classes as they’d like.

September 7 — Harvesting and Preserving Your Herbs
This class will cover both routine harvesting as well as end-of-year harvests.
October 5 — Preparing Your Herb Garden for the Winter

This class will cover fall herb gardening, including planting your garlic, final harvest of your herbs, protecting your outdoor herb beds, and when and how to bring which tender perennials indoors for the winter. It will also cover tabletop herb planters and which herbs will thrive indoors.
November 2 — Holiday Cooking with Herbs

This class will cover both traditional uses of herbs, in holiday cooking, such as sage and garlic stuffing, and rosemary butter on rolls, as well as introducing newer ways to incorporate herbs into holiday cooking, such as horseradish and apple pie or oregano and butternut squash soup.
December 7 — Herbal Holiday Gifts

This class will cover ways to turn a bountiful herb harvest into homemade gifts. From herb jelly to herbal salt scrub, from dry rub to peppermint tea and scented mug rugs, we will explore how to use your herbs for the perfect gift for everyone on your list.
