Saginaw to Host Historic Preservation Tax Credit Workshop for Commercial and Residential Property Owners

-

LANSING, MI – March 16, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Owners of historic residential and commercial properties are encouraged to attend a workshop on maximizing the use of Federal and State Historic Preservation Tax Credits on Tuesday, March 22. The workshop will be presented by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the Michigan Historic Preservation Network (MHPN), the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP), and Preservation Saginaw.

State Historic Preservation Office architect Bryan Lijewski and Brenna Moloney the MHPN’s preservation specialist for the City of Saginaw, will review the different types of historic designation, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, and the tax credits available for the rehabilitation of historic properties.

“The city of Saginaw has great architecture that provides opportunities for economic revitalization,” Lijewski said. “We want to help people understand how to maintain the character of the buildings ? and of their community as a whole ? and help them take advantage of the incentives that exist for the owners of these buildings.”

Lijewski will also review the state tax credit application and answer any questions that people may have.

In October the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Michigan Historic Preservation Network hired Moloney as a part-time preservation specialist for the city of Saginaw. Moloney advises city and county employees on historic preservation issues, specifically in response the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and works to foster better coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office. She also works to educate the community on the importance and benefits of historic preservation by strengthening the Historic District Commission, offering workshops, and working with Preservation Saginaw, the city’s preservation advocacy group.

The free workshop will take place from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Tuesday, March 22, in the Hoyt Library Meeting Room, 505 Janes Avenue. For additional information, contact Brenna Moloney or 231-690-7221, or Bryan Lijewski, SHPO, 517-373-1361.

The State Historic Preservation Office is part of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority is dedicated to building a thriving and vibrant future for Michigan. MSHDA provides tools and resources to improve people’s lives through programs across the state. These programs assist with housing, build strong neighborhoods, and help create places where people want to live and work. MSHDA’s programs work in four areas: affordable rental housing; supporting homeownership; ending homelessness; and creating vibrant cities and neighborhoods. For further information on this or other MSHDA programs, go to www.michigan.gov/mshda.*

*MSHDA’s loans and operating expenses are financed through the sale of tax-exempt and taxable bonds as well as notes to private investors, not from state tax revenues. Proceeds are loaned at below-market interest rates to developers of rental housing, and help fund mortgages and home improvement loans. MSHDA also administers several federal housing programs.
