LANSING, MI – March 9, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Today Senator Gretchen Whitmer (D-East Lansing) offered the following statement on the need to protect Michigan consumers from foreclosure scams, and her legislation to help do so. Senate Bill 930, Whitmer’s legislation to develop qualifications and regulations on foreclosure consultants, was introduced in October 2009 and is currently awaiting action by the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee.
“I appreciate the Administration’s concerns regarding foreclosure scams, as we need to be doing everything possible to protect consumers from being taken advantage of during these tough times. I introduced legislation last fall that would crack down on ‘foreclosure consultant’ scams by establishing basic qualifications and regulations,” said Senator Whitmer. “These criminals are preying on people when they are at their most vulnerable and desperate to keep their homes, and we need to make sure consumers aren’t being exploited. I urge the Senate Republican Leadership to take up my legislation and pass it now to better protect our citizens from scams and help keep them in their homes.”
