Levin, Stabenow Announce Second Infusion of $15 Million for Detroit Metro Airport
WASHINGTON, DC – May 21, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced today the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $15 million to the Wayne County Airport Authority through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The funding will be used to rehabilitate a runway at Detroit Metropolitan International Airport. This funding is in addition to the $15 million announced on May 13 for the rehabilitation of runway 9R/27L.
“This funding will help make air travel safer and more efficient in Michigan and beyond,” said Levin. “These federal economic recovery dollars will provide the resources for this important upgrade and create much-needed jobs here in Detroit.”
“I am pleased that Detroit Metro Airport received this recovery funding to help improve its infrastructure,” Stabenow said. “Repairing this runway will help improve passenger safety and create good-paying jobs in Michigan.”
The ARRA set aside $1.1 billion to make discretionary grants under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), with priority given to projects that can be awarded quickly and completed within two years. The AIP provides grants to public agencies and other entities for the planning, development and improvement of public-use airports that meet certain criteria.
The funding announced today will be used to rehabilitate runway 03L/21R.
