WILD BULL ELK HAS MADE MID-MICHIGAN ITS TEMPORARY HOME

Occasionally wildlife travel to areas where they are not typically found. A young bull elk recently has been spotted in several locations in mid-Michigan that are outside its home range. “We first started receiving reports of a bull elk in Ogemaw County, and then Gladwin County and most recently near Beal City and the Herrick area in Isabella County,” said Michigan Department of Natural Resources elk specialist Chad Stewart. “We were able to confirm the locations and also that it does appear to be a wild elk.”

Huizenga Votes to Help Flint Recover, Strengthen Great Lakes Economy

Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) voted in support of the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 (WRDA) which provided federal infrastructure assistance to Flint, and included Congressman Huizenga’s amendment to permanently prioritize Army Corps funding for the Great Lakes Navigation System (GLNS). The system is a critical international waterway that extends from the western end of Lake Superior to the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the Atlantic Ocean, a distance of over 2,400 miles. The U.S. portion of the system includes 140 harbors and over 600 miles of maintained navigation channels. The Great Lakes Navigation System can handle 200 million tons of cargo, generating $18 billion in economic activity and supporting 130,000 jobs

Upton, House Advance Critical Water Infrastructure Legislation to Help Flint

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today joined his House colleagues in voting to advance the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 (WRDA) by a bipartisan 399 to 25 vote. The legislation authorizes $170 million to provide assistance for the city of Flint, Michigan, through an amendment offered by U.S. Reps Dan Kildee, D-Flint, and John Moolenaar, R-Midland, and championed by Upton. MPSC approves Upper Peninsula Power Company electric rate increase, customers to see refund

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) on Sept. 8 authorized Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCo) to increase its electric rates by $4,647,975 annually, a figure 30.4 percent below what the utility requested. Also, because the final amount approved was lower than the $6,259,025 the utility self-implemented in March, some customers will see a rate decrease, effective Sept. 23. By state law, customers who paid more than the currently approved amount will also get a refund of the difference between what the utility self-implemented and the MPSC granted, plus interest, in the future
