MPSC Approves Settlement Agreement Eliminating Alpena Power Company’s Renewable Energy Monthly Surcharge

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today approved a settlement agreement authorizing Alpena Power Company to implement its renewable energy plan. Because the utility purchases its required renewable energy credits from Consumers Energy Company, which has reduced its renewable energy surcharge to zero, Alpena Power Company will also reduce its monthly surcharge to zero, effective July 1

State of Michigan to auction Tax-foreclosed properties

More than 600 properties, in five Lower Michigan counties, three Northern Michigan and four Upper Peninsula counties, will be auctioned off during State of Michigan Tax-Foreclosed, Real Property Auctions on August 12th and 13th. Registration for interested bidders will begin at 9:00 a.m., each day, with auctions scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) today announced that Packard Health of Ann Arbor will receive a $541,667 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to open a new health center in Ypsilanti and provide health care services at the Delonis Center Homeless Shelter in Ann Arbor. The grant was awarded through the New Access Point program, which seeks to expand access to primary care for underserved communities.

U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters today applauded the announcement that seven projects in Michigan will receive $2.3 million to restore coastal wetland habitats and protect water quality in the Great Lakes region. U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters today introduced bipartisan legislation to recognize historically significant underwater areas in the Great Lakes as National Marine Sanctuaries, which would increase tourism and boost Michigan's economy. The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Assessment Act would build on the success of Thunder Bay in Alpena, which was designated in 2000 as the only freshwater marine sanctuary in the country.

Progress Continues Overnight for Restoring Power from Weekend Storms

As of 4 a.m., approximately 19,000 Consumers Energy customers remained without power across Michigan. Almost all of the customers are located north of U.S. 10, where Sunday’s series of severe thunderstorms caused the most damage. More than 164,000 customers lost power during the storms

The City’s Response to the Heavy Storm Occurring on Sunday, August 2

As you are all aware, on Sunday, August 2nd, in the early evening, a heavy storm swept through the Northern Michigan region causing significant damage in many communities. It has been reported that Traverse City witnessed straight line winds of over 70 mph which caused over 3,000 Traverse City Light and Power customers to lose power and the majority of the City to face fallen trees and large amounts of debris on their property.

DNR awards nearly $250,000 for projects along Iron Belle Trail

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has awarded 16 grantees in 15 counties a total of $249,190 to develop Michigan’s newest (and longest) trail, the Iron Belle. Each grant recipient was awarded up to $25,000 for planning, engineering and design projects along either the hiking route or the bicycle route
