The House Financial Services Committee passed the Mortgage Choice Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) and Congressman Greg Meeks (D-NY). The Justice Department today announced that Frank D. Tjoelker, an owner and manager of rental properties in and around Grand Rapids, Michigan, will pay $150,000 to resolve allegations that he sexually harassed multiple women who have lived in or inquired about his rental properties. Since January of this year, the Civil Rights Division has filed or settled five cases alleging unlawful sexual harassment of women in housing and recovered over $1 million for victims such harassment.

Nearly $400,000 in Grants Awarded to Community Water Systems

Mason “For Sale By Owner” Advertising Violates Fair Housing and Civil Rights Laws

he Michigan Department of Civil Rights confirmed today that it has opened a complaint against James Prater of Mason, Michigan for discriminatory advertising in the sale of a home. Posted on the lawn of Prater’s home is a “For Sale by Owner” sign and a separate sign that states “Terms, No Foreigners, Iraq Vet.” Advertising that includes discriminatory language like a statement excluding a protected class is a violation of both the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) and the federal Fair Housing Act.

EPA Announces Michigan Can Forgive Flint’s Past Drinking Water Debt

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concurred with the State of Michigan’s plans to forgive $20.7 million in past Drinking Water State Revolving Fund debt owed by the City of Flint. Taking this step is in line with the May 2017 Consolidated Appropriations Act signed by President Trump and will help Flint, the state, and EPA continue working together to protect public health and improve the city’s water system.
